What Is Ring Sort?

Ring Sort belongs to a well-loved family of puzzle games often called "sort puzzles" or "ball sort" games — the challenge is always the same at its core: untangle a mixed-up collection of items, one move at a time, until everything is grouped by type. In Ring Sort, the items are colorful rings stacked on vertical pegs. Every peg starts with a random jumble of colors stacked on top of each other, and you win a level by getting every peg to hold rings of a single color, stacked neatly from bottom to top.

You can only ever move the ring sitting on top of a peg, and you can only place it onto an empty peg or onto another ring of the exact same color. Every level is built to have a valid solution, so being stuck almost always means an earlier move needs to be undone or rethought, not that the puzzle itself is broken.

Before making your first move, scan the whole board and identify which pegs are closest to being a single color already — those are usually your safest early targets. Try to keep at least one peg empty for as long as possible; an empty peg is flexible storage space that lets you temporarily park a ring you don't have anywhere else to put yet, which is often the key to unlocking a jammed section of the board.

It also helps to think one layer at a time rather than trying to solve the whole board at once: clear the topmost mismatched ring on each peg first, then work downward, re-checking after every move whether a new placement has opened up (or closed off) another peg.
