Because there's no way to lift a tile out of the frame, every move shuffles the empty space to a new spot rather than moving a tile freely, which is what makes the puzzle a genuine logic challenge rather than simple rearranging.
This version uses a 5×5 grid with 24 numbered tiles, a step up in complexity from the smaller 4×4, 15-tile version many people remember from childhood toys — more tiles means more possible arrangements and a puzzle that takes real planning to solve efficiently, not just patience.
Most efficient solvers tackle a sliding puzzle one row (or column) at a time rather than trying to place every tile at once. Start with the top row: get tile 1 into its correct corner position first, then tile 2 next to it, and so on across the row, using the empty space as your only tool to shuffle tiles into place without disturbing ones you've already solved.
Once the top row (and often the second row) is locked in, the remaining unsolved tiles form a smaller sliding puzzle inside the larger one — you can essentially treat the rest of the board as its own fresh puzzle and repeat the same row-by-row approach until only the final few tiles remain, which almost always require a small, memorized 3-tile rotation trick to finish cleanly.
